The success of the climb changed Edmund Hillary's life forever - he became both an international celebrity and a local hero. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and received awards and honours from all over the world.

In one of his interviews Edmund Hillary was asked a question as to which was the most important step when he was en route to conquer the world's highest mountain. Most of the people thought that it was the first step, which he took, or the one when he reached the peak.

But Edmund Hillary said “Every Step!”
